These are the 2020 interim reports. Heneb’s analysis of the 2020 and 2025 excavations has since revised their interpretation, and the final report is being prepared. Read them as a record of the first season, not the current account.
Trench 1, Table of Fabrics: total number of pottery sherds and weight. Dyfed Archaeological Trust, January 2021.
A count of every piece of pottery found in Trench 1 in 2020, layer by layer and type by type. It is the raw data behind the Ceramic Finds report.
Trench 1 was rich in medieval pottery: local West Wales cooking pots and jugs, Llansteffan-type jugs, and wares from Bristol and the West of England, including the large group of Ham Green jugs from layer (1089). The report suggests much of it came from the castle.
How to read the table. Each row is a context: one numbered layer or feature the archaeologists dug, written in brackets, such as (1037). “U/S” means unstratified, found out of its layer. Each column is a type of pottery (a fabric), named for where it was made and running roughly oldest to newest. Under each type are two numbers: how many pieces, and their weight in grams. The Ceramic Finds report explains every type. This is the 2020 interim data.
